About Us
The St. Charles County Historical Society (SCCHS) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on preserving the history and genealogy of St. Charles County.
Our mission is to collect, preserve, and share, the history and genealogy of St. Charles County for future generations.
SCCHS was founded in 1956 with a mission to preserve the rich history of the county. In 2009 the St. Charles County Genealogical Society merged with SCCHS and the mission expanded to include the preservation of the genealogical records of the county.
We carry out our mission through:
- Preserving the county’s historical and genealogical records in our archives
- Hosting events and speakers on historical topics
- Sharing genealogy tips with our members
- Publishing quarterly scholarship on historical topics
The Archives is home to over 200 years of historical documents, manuscripts, maps, photographs, and early government records. These records include but are not limited to:
- Birth records
- Church records
- Marriage records
- Census records
- Property records
- Naturalization records
- Wills and Probate files
- Obituaries
- Burial and cemetery records
- Genealogical publications and books
- Photographs
- Diaries, journals, scrapbooks, and personal records
- Atlases, plat books, and Sandborn and aerial maps
- Local newspapers dating as far back as the mid-19th century
- Circuit court records
